Augmented Reality means that the computer mixes virtual realities to the physical world. A nice development for even nicer concepts.Augmented Reality means that the computer mixes virtual realities to the physical world. A nice development for even nicer concepts.

Augmented Reality fits exactly in our trend named transreality. This is where the physical world comes together/merges with the virtual world. A good example and one from which I expect a lot is NOKIA MARA. We wrote already about this on Extend Limits. But of course there are many more initiatives. Just look at the YouTube movies and imagine how the world might look like when Augmented Reality is a everyday reality. In the near future we will be able to imitate the consequences of decisions in the present for the future. Just think about adjustments on physical products which can be easily and efficient (low costs) translated by Augmented Reality. So before you decide to change your kitchen you can walk through the new kitchen by Augmented Reality. The world will be become even more visual and interactive then today. Augmented Reality will also change the way we learn and make thinks sexier and easier to learn. We call this Technology Enhanced Learning. By the way, soon I will write a post about the future of primary schools because of a session I did at a Dutch primary school. The realisation of Augmented Reality is very near and it will become more and more available for the consumer because of the every reducing prices for the necessary technology and the advances in computing power. So how do you see the future of Augmented Reality?

I read your post about augmented reality, a good one with also nice examples. Your right augmented reality is just one devellopment in a world where technology is changing the whole world rapidly. The future we will see is (what I call) transreality. The seemless integration of the virtual world with the physical world.

a thousand tomorrows

The possible applications of augmented reality are manifold indeed. Labs and companies across the world are dreaming up new possible scenarios of use each day. In a sense, augmented reality is only one element in a growing mixed-reality world, which includes mixed applications of augmented reality, augmented virtuality and virtual reality. I recently blogged a few lines about this over at 'a thousand tomorrows' as well: http://www.pantopicon.be/blog/2007/02/24/soap-opera-shopping-and-beyond/
