Some news from our virtual worlds SecondLife and ActiveWorlds.
1. Active worlds for consumers
Activeworlds is a virtual world with a long history. The European version of Activeworlds was namely for professional use (business, education and media). But there is a virtual environment for consumers with a large group of participants. The launch of this new environment will be round Christmas but if you are curious you can already have a look.

2. Dell Island in SecondLife.
Dell has entered the virtual world of Second Life with Dell Island. In Dell Island people can sit down at several drafting tables and configure their XPS 1710 notebooks. The notebooks can be purchased for use within an avatar's second life. In the near future Dell eventually wants to let residents purchase real PCs for their first lives.

3. Thriller in SecondLife
The popular song Thriller is also done in SecondLife, just watch the Youtube video.
4. Forbidden City IBM
The Second Life avatar of IBM's chief executive and chairman, Sam Palmisano, standing outside the Forbidden City, a space in the virtual world created by IBM with the Chinese government. Palmisano is announcing $100 million in investment in two years to IBM employees in Beijing and Second Life. More info: News.com

The software tool CopyBot can clone avatars, objects and textures is stoking the ire of Second Life business owners who fear their creations could be illicitly copied and sold. Large demonstrations were held to stop Copybot entering Secondlife.

Microsoft Research heeft hoge ogen gegooid met hun 3d hologram dat ook nog tastbaar is. Nu hebben we al eerder over ontwikkelingen binnen de 'hologram wereld' gesproken maar Microsoft Research zet weer een belangrijke stap met hun Vermeer project.
