The opening of the new Amsterdam public library attracted quite some attention. It made me think that libraries are quite able to make the jump from dusty old places with books to relevant public places where you can gather information (offline and online), meet and learn. Libraries still have books, but they become less important. Backed by attractive architecture and design (who doesn't love the new city library of Seattle) libraries reinvented themselves to stay relevant in the digital age. Opposed to e.g. the post offices, they are complete out of sync with the new digital age although I have to admit that FedEx showed that by buying Kinko's they understand there's a shift going on. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, post offices are completely out of date. What's to like about places where you still have to stand in line, wait to be served and offer little self service? Just curious to see if post offices will find a way to make themselves relevant and liked in the digital age.
