This blog featured many examples of scenarios for RFID, for example the store cart of the future. A new generation of RFID should bring us a step closer to reality. The Holst Centre in Eindhoven demonstrated the new chips in San Francisco. These next-generation RFID tags are so called 'organic' tags as they are made of plastic and are not silicium based. So far, solicium based chips were more expensive, but performed better. The new plastic chips are as good as silicium based chips and are five times smaller than current chips. These criteria are important to perform in an environment where many items all need to be tagged with RFID. The next step in the process is to create a large-scale production process, this will bring costs per chip down significantly enabling the widespread use of these chips. This means, the shop cart scenario will become reality within a couple of years!
