In the near future we will see a trend that employers will put more pressure on their employees to live healthier lifestyles. A study recently released by the Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in Indiana made a direct relation between lifestyle and insurance claims visible. Of course this is not very suprising news but the shocking news is that an amazing 87.5 percent of the claims' costs were attributable to the individual's lifestyle. For the survey the students looked at claims data as well as the blood-test results to determine the cost of lifestyle choices.
The results of the survey can have huge implications, especially as countries are battling against the rising health-care costs and companies ask employees to shoulder more of the burden. So in the future the organization we work for will be the big brother for healthcare and lifestyle??
We already see a trend towards employers with onsite health clinics. According to a study by Watson Wyatt, 33 percent of the 275 organizations (collectively employ more than 4.9 million workers) have set up onsite medical clinics or plan to so.
The benifits of onsight clinics are for example:
- onsite clinics deliver greater access to care at lower costs.
- onsite clinics address employees' overall health issues.
- Onsite clinics can provide risk management on workplace safety.
So onsight clinics will become a normal thing within organizations of the future. Will the docter of the town have new competitors??

In mijn omgeving zie ik dat "gezondheidsproblemen" bij de ene medewerker onmiddelijk een effect heeft op het gedrag van andere medewerkers. Concreet, iemand krijgt ernstige gezondheidsproblemen en prompt stoppen er een paar met roken. Je zou bijna hopen dat er af en toe iemand flink ziek wordt om het gewenste doel te bereiken.Het belonen van "verstandig" gedrag werkt, zoals je zelf al aangeeft, niet. Ook je laatste "rigide" mogelijke oplossing zal vermoedelijk niet werken; te weinig winnaars, te veel verliezers.
