3d could become the new standard from 2009 in the movieindustry and might even save the industry from their strong competitors like home theatre, gaming and internet. Last week 3d movies took a big leap forward when Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson signed to produce a trilogy of 3-D movies about comic-book hero Tintin (Paramount’s DreamWorks Studios). And even an 3-D concert film rock band U2 was broadcasted at the Cannes Film Festival. We know 3d is not very new. In the 1950s the first movies came in 3d like House of Wax and Melody. But the quality was very poor and just a couple of years we are able to make breathtaking movies in 3d against acceptable investments.

3d movies have now the interest of Hollywood’s directors and they first anouncements came for the production of new 3d movies. The motion picture “Avatar” will arrive in 2009 and will be in 3d. Just like existing movies of which directors want to make a 3d version like Jaws, Star Wars and Titanic. But if you can't wait. In November 2007 Beowulf will see it's first 3d light in the theatres. And DreamWorks Animation SKG announced that all of its future movies will be shot in 3-D, for release beginning in 2009.

I believe that this is the single greatest opportunity for the moviegoing experience since the advent of color. It has been more than 60 years since there has been a significant enhancement or innovation to the moviegoing experience (Jeffrey Katzenberg, executive of DreamWorks Animation)

I don't think the upcoming of the 3d experience will save the movie industry. These kind of devellopments we will also see at home. Here we will have also more of a experience when we watch a movie. technologies like AMBX and new surround sound and TV sets will realize that. So the movie industry must not think that 3d will be their magic pil for the future.
