Connecting cars wordt snel een realiteit

It will not take long or cars will communicate with each other and give information about accidents, traffic jams etc. This wil all be possible due to peer-to-peer connections between cars, trucks and bikes. Cars or bikes experiencing problems will pass data that ripples down the chain of vehicles behind them. The information will be conveyed to drivers via dashboard screens or a mobile phone headset. For spotting dangers and jams, the system uses data from sensors that will be fitted to cars, bikes and trucks in the near future.

The system will be intelligent and is able to recognise how busy a driver is and adjust warnings to take account of the "cognitive load" a driver is under. So when a driver is executing a series of fast manoeuvres the system would not use a blaring alarm to warn him of the upcoming danger. The danger will then be pointed out by a danger point on a digital map. When a driver has 'less cognitive load' the system uses visual cues on a dashboard screen as well as telling the driver about the problem via a headset. This is cool and this is the future of early warning systems in cars, bikes and trucks.

The project named SmartWeb is being co-ordinated by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and has 16 other partners like BMW, Siemens, Daimler Chrysler, Deutsche Telekom and the European Media Lab.
